(The Express, July 31, 1999)
Microsoft rose last night on reports that the US government is set up to split
up the company - a move which could provide a windfall for the world's
richest man.
Shares in Microsoft added 1.2 %, giving it a market value of L278 billion, on
a newspaper story, that Washington antimonopoly regulators had asked Wall
Street investment banks for ideas on how the world's biggest computer
software maker could be broken up. Analysts have said such a move would add to
its market value because the parts are worth more than the whole.
A break-up could add to the $100 billion (L62 billion) fortune, mostly in
shares, of chairman Bill Gates. The US federal government and 19 states have
accused Microsoft of illegally using its dominant position in operating
software to intimidate rival Internet browsers firms.
